Weird and Wonderful World Races



Runners are known to be some of the crazy athletes in the world and like to challenge themselves with some crazy events..either it be insane distances, insurmountable terrains, or ridiculous climates. Below are some unusual events that may tempt you to have a go or see you hanging up your running shoes forever!

Siberian Ice Marathon
This is the coldest race in the world, and take place each January in Omsk, Russia. The coldest recorded temperature here was in the 2001 race, when it plummeted to -39. Although it calls itself a marathon, it really is only 21.1km in distance

The Barkley Marathon
100miles and 60 Mile Fun Run- March
Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee 
 5 x 20 mile loops...Total climb 20km....Trail not maintained for over 50 years.
Since the race began in 1986, only 9 runners out of about 700 have finished within the 60 hour cutoff.
60 hr time limit ( average speed of 36min per mile)

Bare Buns Fun Run
July
It is a 5K (3.1 mile) Trail Run/Walk on beautiful Tiger Mountain. The challenging course runs over unpaved road, with a short section of cross country. Uphill to the turn around and back downhill. If you find the risk of sunburn challenging enough, the course is a serene walk through the forest.

The Great Tibetan Marathon
Known to be the toughest marathon in the world, this race starts in Ladakh, India at 3,880 metres above sea level and finishes 400 metres lower. August

Volcano Arts Center Rain Forest Runs
August - Hawaii
This new event is at 4,000 feet elevation and will traverse the majestic native rain forest in quaint Volcano Village and the ranches near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. All distances will be open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, participating for health, enjoyment and to raise funds for the Volcano Art Center.

Pikes Peak Marathon
Americas ultimate Challenge

This marathon starts out like a lot of races on Any Street, USA. But your first left turn will have you turning in the direction of up! During the next 10 miles, as you gain almost 6,000 vertical feet, your legs, lungs, heart and mind will be worn to a ragged nothingness. But it won’t be until your last three miles, with still over 2,000' of vertical to go, that you will realize where the Marathon got its moniker—America’s Ultimate Challenge.

Marathon du Medoc
Pauillac- Sept
For running wine lovers, this marathon in Pauillac, France is hard to beat.. Runners head to the starting line to await a sip of wine and a trapeze act dangling overhead. The course navigates through vineyards and includes 22 refreshment stands and 21 food stands, not a lot of running gets done as you are tempted to try the variety of snacks, such as beef, oysters and ice cream. Fancy dress is a must as well. A red carpet decorates the last 100 meters of the race and runners are greeted with more wine once they cross the finish line.

The Polar Circle Marathon
Greenland- Oct
The course is run on the snow covered gravel road connecting the inland ice with the small township of Kangerlussuaq, just north of the Polar Circle. A part of the route even takes place on the Greenlandic ice cap itself.

Everest Marathon- Nepal
November
The Everest Marathon is listed as the highest marathon in the world. The start line is at Gorak Shep 5184m (17,000 feet), close to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. The finish is at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 3446m (11,300 feet) and the course is a measured 42 km (26.2 miles) over rough mountain trails. It is the world's most spectacular race and has been held twelve times since 1987.
